Bode Miller to have surgery

Downhill skier Bode Miller will undergo back surgery this week with a goal of returning to the slopes by January. In March, Miller, 37, first injured his intervertebral disk and compromised the use of his left leg. The Olympic gold medalist hopes to return to competition for the Lauberhorn races in Wengen, Switzerland, January 16-18.  Miller also has goals of competing in the 2015 FIS Alpine skiing world championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado, February 2 – 5. Miller first injured his back in March at a downhill training run at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. He made it worse by training over the summer and planned on racing up until last month when ski racing season began. Unfortunately, Miller had to withdraw from the opening race.
