North Texas Food Bank
In 1982, the North Texas Food Bank was established by Jo Curtis, Kathryn Hall, Lorraine Griffin Kircher, and Liz Minyard. They decided to address the critical issue of hunger in our community by distributing donations of surplus food and grocery products through a network of charitable organizations.
This network included 13 counties: Dallas, Denton, Collin, Fannin, Rockwall, Hunt, Grayson, Kaufman, Ellis, Navarro, Lamar, Delta, and Hopkins. In the first year, 400,000 pounds of food were distributed.
In 1983, members of NTFB’s organizing committee joined members of the Texas Legislature to help pass the Good Faith Donor Act, which protected donors from liability of donations or donated product. After this, many more North Texans were inspired to donate.

It’s a serious and stressful disease to manage.

When we treat this disorder, we remove the herniated disc. We replace it with an artificial device and a metal implant. By doing that, we relieve the pressure off the nerves and off the spinal cord. And inherently patients wake up almost instantaneously, not suffering from any underlying neck pain or pain down the arms anymore. This procedure among all surgeries that mankind has created probably has the best long-term results. And for me is very satisfying because the results are almost immediate. The other condition that commonly occurs due to degenerative disorders in the spine included Spinal Stenosis. When that happens, the actual spinal cord gets compressed. And when that happens, the common symptoms of myelopathy develop. These include trouble, heel-toe ambulating, spaciness for sensations in your hands where you have difficulty performing small manipulations; such as buttoning your shirt or working with small devices. You can have trouble with bowel, bladder dysfunction. It can lead to neurologic symptoms that cause cervical headaches to develop. And once again similarly, what we do is we decompress the spine and we stabilize it through surgery. With people with progressive myelopathy, the treatment of choice is surgery rather than the conservative modalities. Because with our body, we can stand to get our nerves pinched but we don’t really tolerate having the spinal cord undergo pressure for too long.
